A commercial ice machine that is not making ice may lack water, remain stuck in a sequence, fail to harvest or lose refrigeration capacity. Effective troubleshooting begins with the exact model, normal sequence and point where the cycle stops.
Always use the official service manual. Timing, thermistors, pressures and cleaning procedures vary widely. A displayed code points to manufacturer documentation and should never be interpreted without model context.
1. Confirm power and demand
Check disconnect, breaker, switch, ICE/ON mode, bin level and bin-full control. Confirm that no delay, sanitation cycle or lockout is active. An energized machine may intentionally wait when the bin sensor reports a satisfied condition.
2. Observe a complete cycle
Record fill, pump, compressor, fan or condenser water, ice formation, transition and harvest. The exact point where sequence diverges is more useful than an isolated pressure reading.
3. Check water supply
Inspect shutoff, pressure, filter, strainer, inlet valve, float and level. Look for scale, restriction and drain siphoning. Incorrect water volume changes thickness, freeze time and harvest. Follow specified water quality and maintenance requirements.
4. Inspect distribution and evaporator
Confirm that the pump distributes water evenly. Clean nozzles, tubing and surfaces with approved products. Uneven distribution creates an irregular slab and can mislead thickness sensing. Never damage evaporator plating.
5. Verify heat rejection
For air-cooled equipment, inspect filter, condenser, fan, clearance and recirculation. For water-cooled versions, verify flow, valve and temperature. A restricted condenser raises pressure, current and freeze time.
6. Evaluate refrigeration operation
Identify refrigerant and record temperatures, pressures, current, superheat or subcooling under the manufacturer procedure. Investigate leakage, restriction or poor compression after confirming water, airflow and sequence. One pressure never justifies adding refrigerant.
7. Troubleshoot harvest
If ice forms but will not release, verify thickness, cleanliness, harvest water where applicable, hot-gas valve, solenoids, sensors and evaporator condition. A long harvest may result from excessive slab thickness or poor heat transfer.
8. Test sensors and controls
Measure thermistors, floats and sensors against manual curves. Inspect connectors, moisture and wiring before condemning a board. A false input may prevent transition even when compressor and pump operate.
9. Sanitation and final verification
Follow specified chemicals, concentrations, rinsing and intervals. After correction, observe multiple cycles, record freeze and harvest times, then inspect ice shape, leaks and bin level.
