Quebec refrigeration students: build a useful field measurement notebook

A field notebook method for Quebec refrigeration students: record conditions, readings, hypotheses and results without confusing observations with diagnosis.

A useful field notebook connects readings to conditions, hypotheses to evidence and actions to results. For a refrigeration student in Quebec, it supports understanding rather than collecting isolated numbers. A pressure reading without refrigerant, unit or measurement location is difficult to interpret later.

Inforoute FPT currently lists the French Refrigeration program as DEP 5386. Follow your training centre’s and instructor’s requirements for assessed work. This notebook is a personal learning method, not a professional qualification or permission to work independently.

Describe the situation and the question

Record the date, system type, model, identified refrigerant and operating mode. Write the actual problem you want to understand. Separate your observation from the customer’s description. “The temperature stopped falling under these conditions” is more useful than “the unit is broken.”

Keep units and conditions with every reading

Pressure needs its unit and measurement point. Temperature needs its unit, sensor and location. Note ambient conditions, stabilization time and operating mode. Mixing Celsius with Fahrenheit or pressure references can invalidate a comparison even when the arithmetic is correct.

Understand saturation before calculating

The pressure-temperature table relates pressure to saturation temperature for the selected refrigerant. For blends with glide, use the appropriate reference: dew for superheat and bubble for subcooling. Establish the fluid and measurement point before applying a conversion.

The superheat calculator helps check calculations, but preserve the input readings and result in your notebook. One calculated number cannot establish a fault’s cause by itself.

Compare hypotheses before acting

For each hypothesis, write supporting evidence and the test that might rule it out. Airflow, changing thermal load and abnormal evaporator feeding can affect measurements. Seek a discriminating test rather than making a shopping list of replacement parts. A plausible explanation is not yet a confirmed diagnosis.

Use AI to structure the reasoning

A useful technical question includes the model, mode, symptom, readings with units, conditions and completed checks. Ask the HVAC-R AI assistant to identify missing information or compare hypotheses. Verify the response with the equipment manual and instructor before any action. Do not include unnecessary customer personal information in a learning question.

Close each note with the result

  • Initial symptom and context.
  • Initial readings, units and conditions.
  • Hypotheses and checks performed.
  • Authorized action during the exercise.
  • Post-action readings and an evidence-based conclusion.
  • Remaining questions for the instructor.

Electrical testing, refrigerant handling and equipment work require the appropriate safety framework and supervision. A notebook records observations and uncertainty; it does not authorize improvised procedures.

Build a habit that transfers to field service

A technician handing over a job needs to make equipment, tests and follow-up easy for a colleague to find. Practise that habit during training. Read the refrigeration troubleshooting workflow and explore the resources offered through FrigoTechPro’s student access.

Frequently asked questions

What belongs in a refrigeration field notebook?

Record equipment, symptoms, conditions, readings with units, hypotheses, checks, the action performed and its result.

Can AI replace the instructor or manufacturer’s manual?

No. It can help structure questions and hypotheses, but answers must be checked against technical references and with the instructor.
