When an HVAC contactor is not pulling in, replacing it at random is rarely the right first step. The coil may be open, but the 24V call may also be interrupted by the thermostat, wiring, a fuse, float switch, pressure control, board or transformer.
An official Trane troubleshooting flow checks whether the contactor is energized, then looks for 24 VAC at the coil before tracing back through the transformer, fuse, thermostat and wiring. This separates a missing control signal from a failed contactor.
Electrical safety before testing
A contactor separates a low-voltage control circuit from potentially lethal line voltage. Follow lockout procedures, use required PPE and work only within your qualifications. Confirm actual voltages and the equipment schematic; never assume every system uses the same coil voltage.
1. Confirm the cooling demand
- Thermostat powered, cooling mode selected and setpoint below room temperature.
- Y call present at the control output.
- Anti-short-cycle delays completed.
- No active alarm, shutdown or load-shed command.
2. Measure across the contactor coil
Measure between both coil terminals, not only from one terminal to ground. The differential reading answers the main question:
- Rated voltage present, contactor open: check the coil, mechanism and contactor compatibility.
- No voltage: trace the control circuit upstream.
- Low or unstable voltage: look for voltage drop, an overloaded transformer, resistive connections or a partial short.
3. Trace the 24V control circuit
Follow the diagram from the coil toward common and the call input. Check pressure controls, condensate floats, safeties, connectors, board, thermostat, secondary fuse and transformer. Measurements on both sides of each device show where voltage disappears. An open fuse is a symptom; locate the short before replacing it.
4. Test the coil with power isolated
After lockout and verification of zero energy, isolate the coil as instructed. An open or shorted coil confirms failure, but resistance must be interpreted for the specific model and rated voltage. A normal resistance reading does not rule out a mechanically jammed contactor.
5. The contactor closes but the load does not start
The problem is now on the power side. Check line voltage into and out of the contactor, contact condition, connections, compressor protection and the starting circuit. Burned contacts can create significant voltage drop even when the contactor appears closed. Never manually force a contactor to bypass a safety.
