TXV troubleshooting: high superheat, low superheat and hunting guide

TXV underfeeding, overfeeding or hunting? HVAC-R guide to bulb mounting, equalization, charge, restrictions, sizing, subcooling and adjustment.

A thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) controls evaporator feed from superheat. Low suction or unstable superheat does not prove the valve has failed. Charge, subcooling, filter drier, bulb mounting, equalization, airflow and thermal load can imitate a TXV fault.

Danfoss's official thermostatic expansion valve troubleshooting guide recommends checking liquid supply, bulb, equalization, sizing and operating conditions before adjustment or replacement.

Measure before adjusting

  1. Confirm refrigerant, TXV type and thermal load.
  2. Measure suction pressure, saturation temperature and evaporator outlet temperature.
  3. Calculate stabilized superheat.
  4. Measure head pressure, liquid temperature and subcooling.
  5. Check sight glass, temperature drops and continuous liquid feed.

High superheat and underfeeding

Check insufficient subcooling, flash gas, restricted drier or strainer, inadequate pressure differential, undersized orifice, lost bulb charge or poor thermal contact. The bulb must be firmly mounted, insulated where required and positioned according to the manufacturer.

Low superheat and floodback

An overfeeding valve, low setting, poor bulb location or sudden load reduction can feed excess liquid. Confirm readings at the compressor and protect it from floodback. Do not adjust the valve to hide an airflow or load problem.

TXV hunting

Superheat cycling high and low can result from an oversized valve, rapidly changing load, loose bulb, flash gas or unstable adjustment. Record multiple cycles and separate a normal transient from persistent hunting.

External equalization

When evaporator pressure drop is significant, internal equalization may not represent true outlet pressure. Verify the external equalizer is connected at the correct point, clear and leak-free according to the diagram.

Adjust only after proving the system

Record the initial position and make small changes using model-specific instructions. Danfoss notes that change per turn varies by valve family. Allow stabilization after each adjustment and keep the compressor inside its limits.

  • Suction/head pressure and saturation temperatures.
  • Superheat and subcooling before/after.
  • Bulb position and insulation.
  • Drier, strainer and equalizer condition.
  • Load, airflow, setting and TXV model.
