Bad AC capacitor: symptoms, testing and HVAC troubleshooting guide
AC humming, hard starting or shutting down? A field guide to identifying and testing a bad HVAC capacitor without guessing or replacing parts at random.
A bad AC capacitor can prevent a compressor or fan motor from starting, produce a humming sound or trip a protective device. Those symptoms do not prove the capacitor has failed: power, contactor, motor, compressor and control-circuit conditions still belong in the diagnosis.

Common bad capacitor symptoms
- The compressor or fan hums but does not start.
- The unit starts slowly, shuts down or trips protection.
- The outdoor fan does not spin despite a valid call.
- The case is swollen, cracked or leaking.
A safe field diagnostic sequence
- Confirm the call, supply voltage, contactor and safeties before blaming the capacitor.
- Disconnect and lock out power. Verify absence of voltage using an appropriate procedure.
- Photograph the wiring and record the printed microfarad and voltage ratings.
- Discharge and isolate the component according to safe work practices and manufacturer instructions.
- Measure capacitance with a suitable meter and compare it with the tolerance printed on the part.
Dual capacitors: C, FAN and HERM
A dual capacitor commonly serves the condenser fan motor and compressor. Its terminals are not interchangeable. Follow the equipment diagram and identify every conductor before removal. One section can test out of tolerance while the other remains serviceable.
Before installing a replacement
Match the specified capacitance and use a voltage rating compatible with manufacturer requirements. Investigate repeated failures: excess heat, weak connections, an overloaded motor, incorrect parts or a voltage problem. After repair, prove voltage, current, startup and the complete operating cycle.
