AC outdoor unit fan not spinning: HVAC troubleshooting guide

AC outdoor fan not spinning? Safely troubleshoot thermostat calls, contactor, capacitor, motor, voltage, controls, airflow and operating pressures.

An AC outdoor unit fan that is not spinning prevents the condenser from rejecting heat correctly. Discharge pressure and current may climb rapidly until a protection stops the compressor. Shutting the equipment down is generally safer than letting it run without airflow.

A stopped fan may result from no call, an open disconnect, contactor fault, capacitor, motor, speed-control board or mechanical obstruction. ECM and inverter fans require model-specific procedures and cannot be tested exactly like a conventional PSC motor.

1. Confirm the call and actual operating state

Verify mode, setpoint and Y call. Observe whether the contactor closes, the compressor runs and a code or delay is active. Compressor noise does not prove pumping, and a silent motor does not prove that voltage is absent.

2. Disconnect power and inspect

Lock out power and verify absence of voltage. Inspect the grille, blades, debris, bearings, wiring, connectors, contactor and heat damage. Turn the blade only with power off; it should move freely without excessive play or rubbing.

3. Check voltage and contactor

Using a safe energized procedure, measure line voltage at the contactor input and output during the call. An energized coil that does not close, burned contacts or excessive voltage drop can prevent proper motor supply.

4. Test the capacitor

Disconnect and properly discharge the capacitor, then measure capacitance out of circuit. Compare with the marked value and tolerance. A dual capacitor can have a failed FAN section while the compressor section remains functional. Use only approved specifications.

5. Evaluate the motor

Check windings, insulation to ground, temperature, current and voltage. An internal thermal protector may open when the motor overheats and reset after cooling. Find the cause: capacitor, bearings, voltage, blade load, ambient temperature or dirt.

6. ECM or inverter fan

Do not assume constant line voltage directly commands fan speed. Follow manufacturer signals, supplies, codes and test methods. Some modules retain dangerous energy after disconnect; observe the specified discharge time.

7. Check condenser airflow

Inspect coil cleanliness, recirculation, clearance and rotation direction. A reversed blade or incorrect rotation may move very little air even while spinning. After repair, measure temperatures, pressures and current instead of relying only on visual operation.

8. Never push the blade while energized

Starting a fan with a stick or hand is dangerous and is not a diagnostic method. The blade can accelerate suddenly, equipment remains energized and the action hides the actual fault. Use proper electrical measurements with power off and energized only as required.

Field checklist

  • Thermostat call and contactor state.
  • Line voltage at rest and under load.
  • Capacitor value and tolerance.
  • Motor resistance, insulation and current.
  • Blade, bearing and condenser condition.
  • Final pressures, temperatures and current.
