AC breaker keeps tripping: causes and safe HVAC troubleshooting guide

Why does an AC breaker keep tripping? A 2026 guide to overloads, shorts, capacitors, motors, compressors, wiring and safe HVAC measurements.

An AC breaker that keeps tripping is protecting the building from excess current or an electrical fault. Repeatedly resetting it without diagnosis can worsen damage and create a fire hazard. A single trip after a utility disturbance is different from an immediate or recurring trip.

Carrier's official AC troubleshooting guide advises against resetting a breaker again when it immediately retrips. Electricity can be deadly; internal measurements belong to a qualified person.

Record exactly when the breaker trips

  • Immediately on reset: a direct fault, damaged wiring or grounded component may be present.
  • At compressor startup: capacitor, starting circuit, voltage, locked rotor or compressor issues are possible.
  • After several minutes: thermal overload, motor, dirty condenser, pressure or weak connections may be involved.
  • Only in extreme heat: load, heat rejection and supply conditions need review.

Before opening equipment

  1. Remove the thermostat demand and lock out power.
  2. Identify the affected circuit: indoor unit, outdoor unit or accessory.
  3. Compare breaker and conductor ratings with nameplate data; never increase protection as a repair.
  4. Inspect for odor, heat, discoloration, rubbed wires, loose terminals and arcing.

Useful technician measurements

After de-energized checks, measure voltage at rest and under load, current for each motor, capacitor values against tolerance and insulation with an appropriate procedure. Compare current with nameplate data and check voltage imbalance on polyphase equipment. A breaker itself can fail, but only after load and wiring faults are eliminated.

Mechanical faults that become electrical

A restricted condenser, stopped fan or excessive head pressure increases compressor work. A motor with binding bearings can draw excess current. Do not stop at the panel: verify airflow, heat exchangers, pressures, temperatures and mechanical condition.

After the repair

  • Prove multiple starts and a stabilized cycle.
  • Record voltage, current and temperatures under load.
  • Confirm connections remain cool and stable.
  • Document the cause, before/after values and installed protection.
