Grounded compressor: winding resistance and HVAC electrical testing guide

How do you test a grounded compressor? HVAC-R guide to C-R-S terminals, winding resistance, insulation, overloads, voltage and start components.

A grounded compressor can trip a breaker, blow a fuse or prevent startup. But a compressor that will not start is not automatically failed: supply voltage, overload, wiring, contactor, capacitor and starting relay must be checked in a safe sequence.

Copeland's official compressor not-starting troubleshooting guide calls for ground, terminal voltage, winding resistance, current and start-component checks before compressor replacement.

Safety and preparation

  1. Disconnect, lock out and verify absence of voltage.
  2. Identify the compressor and obtain its diagram and nameplate data.
  3. Photograph and label conductors before removal.
  4. Discharge capacitors with an appropriate method.
  5. Completely isolate compressor terminals from the circuit.

Identify C, R and S

On a single-phase compressor, measure all three terminal pairs. Typically the highest resistance is R-S, the lowest is C-R and the middle value is C-S; the two smaller readings should add close to the largest. Always follow manufacturer data, especially with electronic modules or unusual designs.

Test insulation to ground

Measure each terminal to a clean metal point on the compressor using the proper instrument and procedure. Direct continuity indicates a serious fault. A basic ohmmeter does not always replace an insulation test, and interpretation depends on the instrument, temperature and manufacturer requirements.

Open overload or winding

A hot compressor can open its internal overload and create misleading readings. Allow it to cool according to procedure and repeat the tests. If the overload never resets, a winding remains open or resistances are inconsistent, compare with service information before condemning the unit.

Electrically sound but still not starting

Check loaded voltage, voltage drop, connections, contactor, capacitor, relay and starting device. Measure starting current without leaving the motor in locked rotor. Confirm pressures can equalize and the compressor is applied inside its operating envelope.

Record before replacement

  • C-R, C-S and R-S resistance.
  • Each terminal-to-ground reading.
  • Voltage at rest and startup.
  • Capacitance, current and component condition.
  • Refrigerant, pressures, temperature and compressor model.
